The key difference between a driver’s license that has been suspended and one that has been revoked is the length of loss of driving privileges. A driver whose license is suspended license may, under certain circumstances, become re-licensed. On the other hand, a driver whose license has been revoked is incapable of driving in New Jersey ever again. In NJ, there are only a few traffic statutes that require revocation of driving privileges. One is leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury. If convicted twice under this statute, a driver is subject to lifetime revocation of their license. In addition, the Chief Administrator of the Motor Vehicle Commission has fairly broad discretion to revoke a driver’s license for good cause or willful violation of the NJ traffic laws.
